Meet Chewy: The Four-Legged 13-Year-Old Survivor Who Never Stopped Adventuring

Meet Chewy: The Four-Legged 13-Year-Old Survivor Who Never Stopped Adventuring

If you've ever cycled through St. Petersburg, Florida and done a double-take at a tiny brown dog riding up front with the confidence of someone who absolutely owns the place — you've met Chewy. He's part adventure companion, part neighbourhood fixture, and entirely unforgettable. Strangers stop mid-stride just to say hello.

Chewy enjoys his favourite spot — front and centre on every adventure.

But Chewy's life didn't start with sunny bike rides. More than 11 years ago, he was found on the streets of Texas — injured, alone, and believed to have been struck by a car. He came into his family's life as a medical foster, needing reconstructive surgery on one of his back legs. That was just the beginning: over the years, he's also had two hernia surgeries, chest surgery, and more. Through every recovery, Chewy bounced back.

A DNA test eventually confirmed what his family had long suspected — he's 50% poodle, 50% chihuahua, though they mostly just call him their little brown dog. Now somewhere between 13 and 14 years old, he's racked up an impressive life résumé: hiking in the Colorado mountains, island-hopping in the Pacific Northwest, paddleboarding in Florida, and spending years travelling full-time. He has always loved being outside, in the middle of whatever's happening.

A Sudden and Scary Diagnosis

About two years ago, things changed fast. Chewy lost the use of his back legs almost overnight. The diagnosis was IVDD — intervertebral disc disease — a condition where spinal discs rupture and press on the spinal cord. It's more common in small and long-bodied breeds, and it can strike without any warning.

Emergency surgery brought him back. But his neurologist was clear about what recovery had to look like: no upright carrier positions, no dangling, no being held in ways that put pressure on his spine. For a dog who had spent his whole life chasing the next adventure, this felt like a door closing — but his family refused to accept that.

The Mighty Chewy!

Finding a Way Forward

The answer came in the form of the BuddyRider® — a bike seat designed to let dogs ride in a natural, relaxed seated position. Unlike traditional pet carriers or backpacks that hold dogs upright or suspended, it supports Chewy the way his body needs: no spinal compression, no strain. Sarah called it "such a gift."

He took to it almost immediately. These days, he's been known to doze off mid-ride, lulled by the breeze and the gentle rhythm of the wheels beneath him.

"It's given him a way to keep doing something he loves — cruising around town with us, watching the world go by, and getting fresh air," says Sarah. "At this stage in his life, experiences mean everything to us and this front row seat has let us keep including him in our adventures, safely."

Still Going, One Ride at a Time

Today, Chewy is still out there — nose in the breeze, eyes on the street, charming every person he passes from his spot in the BuddyRider®. "He really is such a little treasure," says Sarah. "We're so grateful to have found a way for him to keep enjoying the outdoors."

Chewy's story is a reminder that adventure doesn't have to end — it just might look a little different than before. Let's GO, right Chewy?!
